Participatory Conversation Event “Feast of Strangers” by Theodore Zeldin
The premise of the “Feast of Strangers” is simple: you sit opposite someone you don't know, and you both receive a Conversation Menu to guide you. But instead of dishes, the menu offers a sequence of questions – from light “starters” to deeper “main courses” and reflective “desserts.” As you move through these conversational courses, you are invited to explore themes of personal histories, memories, values, friendships, and emotions. Gradually, the exchange slips beyond the surface of everyday talk, and two people who began as strangers discover how their perspectives meet and where they differ, revealing how attentive dialogue can open the door to unexpected connections.
Since it was first created in 2001, “Feast of Strangers” has taken place in more than 14 countries worldwide, bringing together thousands of participants. Each encounter is unique – a brief yet meaningful exchange that can shift perspectives and open surprising ways of understanding ourselves and one another.
“Feast of Strangers” will continue to be part of the Art Week of the Annual Art Award of Latvia, and it will travel through various Latvian regions and cities. We invite you to join the first edition in Valmiera, which will be opened by Theodore Zeldin. More information about the event here.
The event will take place in Latvian and English. Upon arrival, you will be seated in the language group of your choice.

The most important art form we can all practice during our lifetime is the art of living, and it is open to everyone. Professor Theodore Zeldin has spent a lifetime reminding us of this, offering one simple way to begin: to have a sincere conversation with another person. There’s just one small twist – do it with a stranger!
